I designed this display board during my co-op. It's supposed to look like wood and be all vintage-y. The photo is from this article at Sweetspot.ca. Apparently a bunch of celebrities will be seeing it! That's pretty sweet.

Here's something cute I painted for a thank you card I sent to my co-op employers.

Co-op is finally done and now I have a bit of time to get back into school mode as well as cram in as many summer activities as possible into these last two weeks. As fourth year draws closer I'm starting to get more and more nervous. I've barely drawn anything this summer and what I HAVE drawn I'm not happy with. I also feel like I should be promoting myself and getting my work out there more. Even though I'm not even out of school yet I feel like I'm falling behind.

There are some things I feel awesome about though:
- I'm getting back into ballet this fall! (It's also related to my thesis, but that's the only clue I'm going to give you :P not that anyone would be surprised at this)
- I've been hired on as a real part time employee at my co-op (Foxy Originals) so I'll be doing lots more graphic design work for them throughout the year!

I apologize for never updating! I don't really have much to show; summer for me is always a slow period for artwork.

I just finished a little self-initiated illustration project for my internship. I don't think I should post the finals yet because they don't have the jewelry on them yet. The idea my bosses had was to post these illustrations on their facebook fan page and the fans would suggest what jewelry pieces would go best on each outfit and then in Photoshop I would slap on the winning jewelry.

There were originally going to be 5 girls but we cut it down to 3 due to time constraints. The bottom 2 sketches didn't get used.

In the near future I'll probably post a major graphic design dump because that's basically all I've been doing this summer. And also I'll post the 3 final illustrations.

Just playing around with watercolour, graphite, and chalk pastels.

In other news, I got a Tumblr page, just for pictures that I like and find interesting/inspiring. I probably won't be posting any of my art on there but I'm not sure.

I've also been working on potential logo ideas for myself. I'm starting to think about how I'm going to brand myself once I finish school and start looking for work. You can see my little logo thingy on the header of this blog, and any constructive criticism is much appreciated. Tell me what you think! I know, I used three different typefaces *GASP* I'm trying to go for a whimsical but sophisticated look. I'm still workin' on it.

Here's my final self portrait for my Illustrative Drawing & Painting class. It was the only thing that I was somewhat happy with from that class. I made myself look like an albino but it's not really that far from the truth lol. I really enjoy working with chalk pastels, especially the minty green one. Please excuse the poor cell phone-quality photo.

My last day of third year was last Thursday. One more year to go! I'm super excited (and kind of scared) for fourth year. This summer I have to start thinking about what I'll do for my final thesis project, and I also have tons of personal projects planned but I'm not sure how much I'll actually end up doing. At the very least I'm going to try to keep a regular sketchbook. The main thing this summer will be my internship. I'll be doing graphic design/illustration stuff at a jewelry company... how perfect is that?

This is some process work for my graphic design project. I have to design 2 drink labels for a made-up soda beverage (the names were given to us). I'm having a lot of fun with this one. I'm still trying to figure out which colours would be appropriate for a "young hipster" demographic. It looks kinda retro-ish... I'm assuming hipsters like "vintage" stuff so I guess it's ok.

Zoo sketches

My dad and I went to the zoo today. It was freezing cold today, but it was nice because there weren't many people there so I could draw without being disturbed. Obviously a lot of the animals weren't out because of the cold but some were very active and overall I had a good time :)

This was an assignment about Nigerian email fraud. I wanted to try something different by starting off with ink washes then doing watercolour on top, but I don't like the final outcome. Oh well. I struggled with this project so much and I'm just glad it's over so now I can enjoy what's left of my reading week.

Well I'm going back to school tomorrow, and once again I'm wishing that I was more productive over the holidays. Here are some sketches:

The second one is a sketch that I was going to use for my "Christmas painting" for 2010 but I never went further with it because I was lazy. Sheep are awesome :)

Now for some New Year's Resolutions!
- DRAW MORE. This is on my list every single year but I never actually do it. This year is gonna be the year! I promise!
- be more experimental with media and don't get into too much of a rut using my "cute" style which I do a lot because it comes easily to me
- improve my linework with ink

So much for being productive for the rest of the summer lol. Well I'm back to school and third year is going well so far. I just finished my first assignment:

It's based on a conversation I overheard:
"That's out in the middle of nowhere!"
"Yeah, really."
"What's out there, any shopping and stuff?"

It was done with acrylic on wood. I like this way of painting, I think I'll work more like this for next little while and try to get better at it.

I'm back from my month-long trip to Italy! It was an amazing experience. I drew lots of pictures, drank lots of wine and cappucinos, ate lots of gelato, and had a great time getting immersed in all the history. I'm happy with the work I produced; I used a lot of pen and ink and I've gotten a lot more comfortable with the medium.

So without further ado, here's what I've been up to lately (full view please!):

These are 2 of the 4 finals for my lino-cut assignment. The other 2 were just straightforward prints so I didn't scan those. I really like how these turned out, and I'd love to do more lino-cut printing in the future. Well, I spent a lot of money on all the inks and tools so I'd better get some use out of them!

Only 3 more days of school left, and still so much to do... :S

this is a very quick colour rough for my media assignment. It's an illustration of the Japanese folktale "Tamamo no mae". I still have a lot of tweaking to do but this is the general idea of what it's going to look like. I'm supposed to make it a very 2-dimensional/decorative image but I think it still has too much depth even though the linework flattens it out a bit. Hmm...

Here is what has been taking up all my time lately. For my Interpretive Illustration class we had to choose a play or novel from a list and make an illustration, a diorama, and some storyboards for it. I still don't have any pictures of my diorama, but here's everything else.

This was done earlier in the semester. For some reason my scanner gets out of focus whenever I try to scan larger pieces.

And now for the storyboards. I used brown ink for the outlines this time, it turned out quite well I think:

Algernon. I don’t think there is much likelihood, Jack, of you and Miss Fairfax being united.

Jack. Well, that is no business of yours.

Algernon. If it was my business, I wouldn’t talk about it. [Begins to eat muffins.] It is very vulgar to talk about one’s business. Only people like stock-brokers do that, and then merely at dinner parties.

Jack. How can you sit there, calmly eating muffins when we are in this horrible trouble, I can’t make out. You seem to me to be perfectly heartless.

Algernon. Well, I can’t eat muffins in an agitated manner. The butter would probably get on my cuffs. One should always eat muffins quite calmly. It is the only way to eat them.

Jack. I say it’s perfectly heartless your eating muffins at all, under the circumstances.

Next week is reading week, thank god. Now I can sleep!

Party Animals

This is a computer assignment where we had to design a wine bottle and then put it in a context. You can see the mini version of the label on the bottle.

I like how it turned out, though If I had more time, I would have made the animals a little more animated looking. I basically did the entire thing yesterday, on top of spending 8 hours working on the diorama project. Needless to say I didn't sleep much last night.

I will post pictures of my diorama at some point; I haven't gotten a chance to take any pictures of it yet. I also still have to scan the final painting version. Stay tuned! You can see the rough here.

My good friend Celia organized a Christmas card exchange with the people in our program. We were randomly assigned partners, for whom we had to make a Christmas card and send it to them in the mail. Here's my part:

I finished it at the very last minute so unfortunately it's going to be late. Don't worry Andrea, You'll get it eventually! I'm ruining the surprise for you by posting it here, but oh well.

I was a bit of a Scrooge this year because I have a cold and I've been working at my retail job all week, but making this painting made me feel a lot better. Hope you all have a happy holiday!

I'm pretty happy with how they turned out :) It took a LOT of work and I feel like I've really improved my watercolour painting by doing such involved pieces like these.

I'm officially on holidays now!! Now I can sleep, finish my Christmas shopping, clean my room, and see some friends that I haven't seen in a terribly long time because I've been hunched over my drafting table for 4 months. Oh, and I haven't started my Christmas card yet. Oops.
